Attached please find the Summary of New Jersey Animal Rabies Cases by County and Species for January 1 through June 30, 2010. This document is also available on the Departments' website (http://www.state.nj.us/health/cd/stats.shtml).
Through the 2010 second calendar quarter, there have been 123 terrestrial animals and 12 bats, with a total of 135 animal cases confirmed rabid by laboratory testing, which is 8.5% higher than the number of animal rabies cases confirmed this time in 2009.
Thus far in 2010, raccoons have accounted for 76% of the total rabies cases. One positive coyote was identified with rabies in Essex County. The only domestic animal species identified with rabies in 2009 have been cats, with 5 cases. For the past 20 years, cats have accounted for 90% of the domestic animal cases. The counties with the highest number of animal rabies cases are Morris, Burlington, and Middlesex.
