In the late spring of every year the number of human and pet exposures to bats increase and remain elevated through the summer until late fall. The New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services is distributing a guidance document for local health departments, animal control officers, and health care providers on the proper handling of potential rabies exposures from bats, including calls about bats found in homes. Health officers are requested to review this information, share it with staff responsible for providing rabies exposure consultations, and distribute the information to other parties handling bat issues.
For additional information on rabies, contact the NJDHSS, Infectious and Zoonotic Diseases Program, at 609-826-4872 or go to the NJDHSS website: http://www.state.nj.us/health/cd/rabies/techinfo.shtml
